FAQ

FAQ: Motor Vehicle and Driver's License Questions…

How can I get a copy of a lost title?

In order to file for a duplicate title, you will need a tag number, title number, or VIN , as well as your driver's license or state ID. If your tag is up to date, a duplicate title is $13.00. If your tag is expired you must renew your tag before a duplicate title can be issued. If you would like to file for a duplicate title by mail, you must download the duplicate title form from the Oklahoma Tax Commission(www.oktax.state.ok.us).  Just click on motor vehicle, forms, general forms, duplicate title. This form must be notarized.

What happens if I pay my tag late? Is there any penalty?

For brand new vehicles penalties start 30 days after the notary date. It is an automatic $25.25 penalty and continues to go up 25 cents a day. When you are renewing your tag,you have one month grace period, after that it is 25 cents a day.For example, if your tag expired in January, the penalty would start March 1st.

There is a lien on my car title that I have paid off. How do I get it removed?

If you wish to have a new title reflecting that the lien is no longer active, bring your lien release and title to us and we will issue you a new title. The cost of this is $12.00.

I want to purchase a vehicle, but the owner does not a have a title and wants to give me a bill of sale. Will I be able to transfer the vehicle into my name with this?

No. To transfer ownership, a notarized certificate of title, properly assigned to the new owner is required.

The vehicle was a gift. Do I have to pay excise tax?

Yes. You will still pay excise tax on the vehicle, unless it was given to you by a family member. Then you may sign a family affidavit. This exemption only applies when transfering from spouses or between parents and children.

Why do I have to go to the testing station to get an ID?

Because to get an original state issued ID, you must see an examiner first . You will not have to take a test. You must take an original birth certificate or passport to the testing station, along with one other form of ID.Once there, they will issue a form that you will need to bring to our office, and we will issue you your ID. For the address of the nearest testing station you may go to www.dps.state.ok.us. Click on Driver License and IDs.
